Drama Classroom Lighting

Springwood High School in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, part of the West Norfolk Academies Trust, approached us in the Summer of 2019 with an idea to develop two of their drama classrooms. They wanted to install theatrical lighting in both rooms to be used for lessons and mini performances.

The Problem

In order to enhance learning within drama lessons, the Head of Drama wanted to install a simple lighting system in two of their drama classrooms. They were looking for something that was cost-effective and simple to use for both teachers and students and were particularly keen for it to be app-driven.
One classroom already featured rigging from a previous installation, with the other having been recently converted from two language classrooms. The height of the rooms needed careful consideration to provide ample coverage from the lighting installation without being overly obtrusive in the space.

Key pain points:

    • Need for cost-effective, easy-to-use lighting system
    • Outdated rigging needing upgrade
    • Height and coverage concerns for new lighting installation

Creative Spark’s Solution

Creative Spark installed six intelligent lighting fixtures per classroom, each controllable via an app-based system. The setup allows both teachers and students to easily manage the lighting directly from an iPad.

Key Features of the Solution:

  • Intelligent Lighting Fixtures: Installed six fixtures per classroom, offering energy-efficient, highly versatile lighting.
  • Wireless Lighting Control: Operable through an app-based controller, offering ease of use.
  • Custom Lighting Design: COB technology fixtures allowing color mixing and white light models.
  • Quick Setup: The installation was completed swiftly to minimize disruption to school operations.
  • Training Provided: Full training on equipment and continued support for future needs.

Benefits for our client

Springwood High School now has two classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art lighting that enhances both learning and performance options. The new system is not only cost-effective but also highly versatile, providing a hands-on experience for students in lighting technology.

Key Benefits:
  • Hands-on Learning: Students learn and engage with lighting control technology.
  • Cost Savings: The system reduces operating costs while offering energy efficiency.
  • Future-Proof: The system is scalable for future lighting needs and productions.
  • Ease of Use: The app-driven system is simple for both students and teachers to operate.

Robinson Ellin, Head of Drama oversaw the whole project and provided the following feedback,

“We recently had two of our drama classrooms fitted with lighting and wireless controls that connect to iPads. Each step of the install, from initial consultation to final fit, was extremely easy due to very effective communication and was completed as expected and to a very high standard.

Our students will now be able to understand and operate lighting on a regular basis. This will be extremely beneficial in preparing them for their GCSE’s and A levels, as well as allowing us to turn former classrooms into a more purposeful and atmospheric environment for learning and performance.”
